Rainwater collection: If you have clean containers, place them outside during rain. First-flush diverters improve quality by discarding the initial rinse of your roof. Rainwater should still be treated (filter + disinfect) before drinking, as it can pick up contaminants from roofing materials and air pollution.

Rivers, streams, and lakes: Natural surface water always requires treatment. Assume all surface water contains Giardia, Cryptosporidium, bacteria, and viruses. Filter + disinfect (boil, bleach, or tablets) before consumption. Avoid water near farms, industrial areas, or obvious contamination.

Method 2: Bleach Disinfection

Bleach disinfection is effective against bacteria and viruses but has limited effectiveness against Giardia cysts and is largely ineffective against Cryptosporidium. Store bleach in a cool, dark place. Bleach degrades over time - 6% bleach loses approximately 20% potency per year at room temperature. Rotate your emergency bleach supply annually. Method 3: Purification Tablets
