What Is a Berkey?

Black Berkey Elements Deep Dive

The Black Berkey Element is the core technology that differentiates Berkey from competitors. It's a carbon composite filter that combines six different media types in a single cartridge:

Critical caveat: These claims are based on independent laboratory testing commissioned by Berkey, not NSF certification. Berkey has consistently refused to pursue NSF/ANSI certification despite the category being well within NSF's scope. Performance Testing

Pathogen reduction: We did not culture live pathogens. We used MS2 bacteriophage (a standard EPA surrogate for virus removal) at a starting concentration of 1,000,000 PFU/mL. PF-2 Fluoride and Arsenic Filters

Here's where Berkey's value proposition gets complicated. The Black Berkey Elements alone do not effectively remove fluoride. Independent research by third parties (not Berkey's commissioned labs) has shown fluoride reduction of 20-40% with Black Elements only - inadequate for users specifically concerned about fluoride consumption.

To achieve meaningful fluoride reduction, Berkey requires the PF-2 add-on filters. Additionally, PF-2 elements require a 15-minute priming flush before first use and should be stored in a sealed container with water if removed from the system for more than a few days. They cannot be backwashed or cleaned - once fluoride breakthrough occurs, replacement is the only option.

Important: If fluoride removal is your primary concern, Propur's G2.0 element handles it natively without separate add-ons. A Propur Big ($279) with fluoride removal included costs less than a Big Berkey ($367) plus PF-2 filters ($80), and you avoid the ongoing PF-2 replacement cycle.
